Havre Great Weekend

The bad news: Havre's heyday as a rollicking, lawless Western town is over.

The good news: you can still check out opium dens, speakeasies and brothels (safely and morally) at the infamous Havre Beneath the Streets Underground Tour. Then hit the Frank DeRosa Railroad Museum and the nearby Blaine County Museum afterwards to avoid the winter chill...

...or make like a Havreite and embrace it. Beaver Creek Park crawls with pretty cross country and snowmobile trails, while Fresno Reservoir boasts toothy Northern Pike. Plus, a day's adventure makes a good excuse to devour a greasy burger right in your car at Rod's Drive Inn. Before you retire to mom-n-pop Hi Line Motel for the night, squeeze in a final history lesson at the historic Palace Bar, featuring the oldest back bar in Montana.

This was actually where the Underground Tour started for us, and that was just fine, as my kids are train enthusiast. Really small and homely, but there is a ton of information.

Hi Line Motel

We prefer independently owned budget motels, and this one fits the bill! Pink-tiled bathroom, bright turquoise metal desk, and retro-ish furniture...doesn't hurt that the owners are very sweet, too.

Use history as your excuse to visit the Palace. It has the oldest back bar in Montana, manufactured in St. Louis in the late 1800 and installed in the Palace in the 1930s, all original.
